The Future - Success StoriesWe are now about to
embark on a building improvement plan that will enable
Wellesley High School to accommodate an expected peak
enrollment of 1,500 students. At the core of planning for
the best possible educational facility should be the
awareness that our historic school is a vital part of the
community and that the integrity of the exterior and
interior of the 1938 building should be preserved. There are
many examples of successful high school restorations that
can serve as models for us as we pursue this course of
action. Communities across the country have preserved
these architectural landmarks while at the same time
creating uniquely effective educational facilities. With
the help of the National Trust for Historic Preservation,
we offer some descriptions of restoration projects that
architects, contractors, and school administrators have
shared with the Trust. The
information provided in each example should give all
interested people in Wellesley the opportunity to see how
experts have met the challenge of preserving and
restoring historic high schools that are now serving as
state-of-the-art educational facilities. Thirteen of the sixteen schools listed below have pdfs for your viewing. Two of these are located in Massachusetts. Click on the highlighted schools for photographs and detailed accounts: |
